What's Coming to Broadway

By Rylee Vogel

Hamilton, The Lion King, and Wicked likely come to mind when you think of what’s on Broadway today. These are just three shows currently occupying theaters on Broadway. Each of these productions have had long and successful runs, but do you know about the
shows that are about to open? This is a busy month on Broadway!

The Hills of California is set to open September 29th at the Broadhurst Theater, directed by Sam Mendes. This play is transferring from the West End to Broadway with a successful
run. The play is set in Blackpool during the heatwave of 1976 and follows four sisters.

McNeal opens on September 30th at the Vivian Beaumont Theater, directed by Bartlett Sher. This exciting new play by Ayad Akhatr stars Robert Downey Jr. and tells the story of Jacob McNeal, bringing light to “inescapable humanity – and increasing inhumanity – of the stories we tell” (Playbill, 2024).

Yellow Face is set to open October 1st at the Todd Hiames Theater, directed by Leigh Silverman. This comedy explores race complexities in musical theater, all inspired by real events. It is an Obie Award winning play and Pulitzer finalist.

Our Town at the Ethel Barrymore Theater opens October 10th. With a star-studded cast, this American classic play is being brought back to life by director Kenny Leon. This classic play is the coming-of-age story of Grover’s Corner, New Hampshire.

Sunset Boulevard will be revived on October 20th at the St. James Theater, directed by Jamie Lloyd. This musical deals with the driving desire for fame and adoration in Hollywood, where Norma Desmond yearns to return to.

Left on Tenth opens October 23rd at the James Earl Jones Theater, directed by Susan Strongman. This is a love story and romantic comedy that highlights the beauty (and messiness) in opening your heart again.

Romeo and Juliet opens on October 24th at the Circle in the Square Theater. This Shakespearean classic is getting a revival on Broadway with an exciting interpretation by director Sam Gold. Starring Kit Conner and Rachel Zegler, this production highlights youthful divisiveness and fate.

This is going to be such a wonderful month for Broadway. Most of these shows have begun previews already, so make sure to keep an eye out for any exciting sneak peeks or updates. These shows are going to be groundbreaking and something to look forward to! Happy Opening to all!
