It's Rig Safe Day!

The last Friday of April marks Arbor Day, an American holiday dedicated to planting trees to better our environment and grow our communities. While we engage in the environmental parts of the holiday, the day holds special significance in the technical theatre world. Today is also known as Rig Safe Day. It is a day to promote safe rigging and technical theatre education. The two celebrations are cleverly linked through a shared term: an arbor.

Today, we celebrate the riggers who work diligently behind the scenes to ensure the safety and success of live productions. Without their expertise and attention to detail, the magic of the stage would be lost, and the show could not go on.

The Wenger | J.R. Clancy Rigging Guide

Rigging is a highly skilled job that requires both knowledge and skill to ensure the safety of all involved in any stage production. To help support this incredible work, Wenger has developed a free, downloadable Rigging Guide for Performing Spaces. This guide serves as an accessible resource for everyone from beginners to experienced professionals. It covers topics from basic rigging principles (answering questions such as: what is rigging?) to technical details (such as recommended mounting dimensions). By making this guide widely available, Wenger aims to promote both safety and passion for rigging in prospecting and practicing technicians. You can download the guide here: https://www.jrclancy.com/rigging-guide.php

FREE Poster Set

To celebrate the day, Wenger has also created a selection of free, downloadable Rig Safe Day posters. These posters highlight the four different types of rigging covered in the guide: dead hung, manually operated counterweight, counterweight-assisted, and motorized. Each poster shows examples and images to serve as visual aids for students, teachers, and pre-professionals. Please feel free to download them using the form below and take advantage of this resource!

Rig Safe Day is all about promoting rigging knowledge and skills, celebrating the hard work of industry professionals, and actively creating safe performance spaces. Today is the perfect opportunity to thank a rigger that you know for their hard work and dedication to creating safe, and technically advanced theater environments.

Happy Rig Safe Day!
