Tech Week Tips and Tricks

By Rylee Vogel

High school tech week is one of the most rewarding weeks of the year because everyone’s hard work begins to materialize. However, it can also be one of the most stressful weeks for teachers and students alike. Ensuring that everything is prepped helps to smooth out the process and creates a positive learning environment.

Here are some tips and tricks to help create a pleasant process that ensures a safe and efficient working environment:

  • Create a strict schedule for the full week to avoid any miscommunication amongst
staff, students, and parents. Make sure to clearly state call times, breaks, and end
times. It is also helpful to specifically outline which scenes and numbers will be
    covered that day in rehearsal.
  • Communicate the rehearsal schedule with teaching staff, and emphasize to
students the importance of getting homework and assignments done early.
  • Establish a line of communication with students for rehearsals. Make it clear who they should report to should any issues arise (ie. schedule conflicts, tardiness, or
    missing resources).
  • Depending on the age of the students, establish a line of communication with
parents regarding schedule and pick-up times to avoid miscommunication or
    confusion.
  • If applicable, ensure all wavers have been signed by both students and parents
before the week begins. Make sure that all safety guidelines are clearly written and established.
  • Ensure that wardrobe expectations are understood and prepared ahead of time.
Examples of this include making sure that students have closed-toe shoes,
protective gear if working in a dangerous environment, proper dance shoes, a full
    base costume, etc.
  • Emphasize the importance of physical and mental health to students. This can be a stressful time of year, and it is important that students feel supported. Encourage healthy habits like good eating, drinking water, and proper sleep to help promote a healthy cast and crew for upcoming performances.
  • Create a checklist for students to make sure they have the proper resources and material for the week. This will help minimize missing pieces and help smooth out the process. We have created various editable checklists for download here on our website – please feel free to use them!

Taking these factors into account can help eliminate different stress factors and create an enjoyable week for students, staff, and teachers alike. With proper preparation, everyone can focus on creating art and bringing their passions to the stage!

We have designed some helpful, editable checklists for you to use in preparation for tech week and they are FREE to download! Just fill out the form below to get your copy instantly. This packet includes a checklist for teachers, one for tech students and one for actors.
