Health Tips for Performers

By Rylee Vogel

It is an unfortunate coincidence that audition season and cold/flu season perfectly align. Staying healthy as a performer is crucial because our bodies are our instruments. A sore throat can be devastating for a singer, and watching an actor struggle through a dramatic monologue while trying not to sneeze is not ideal. If you do get sick, it is important to go and seek professional medical care; however, preventative care can help avoid illness in the first place, keeping you ready to go for performances and auditions.

Here are some tips for actors to help stay healthy during audition season:

Maintain a Balanced Schedule

Being an actor is exciting. It’s fun to pack your schedule with auditions, dance classes, rehearsals, networking events, and performances. While all these things are important, it is more important to balance your schedule and have time to process and rest. Achieving a good work- life-balance can be difficult, but this will prevent burnout and will help keep you healthy. Stress weakens the immune system, and when you are constantly on the go it can be difficult to prioritize other aspects of your health. Remember to take time for your wellbeing and set boundaries for yourself during this time of year.

Prioritize Sleep

Quality sleep is one of the most effective ways to stay healthy. Studies have shown that young adults and teens need 8-10 hours of sleep a night. Sleep impacts everything from our energy and focus to the immune system. Be sure to consistently get enough sleep to be on the top of your game and give your best performances.

Stay Hydrated and Eat Well

Everyone’s body is different, so it is important to listen to what your body needs. Look into reliable resources- such as books, studies, doctors, or nutritionists to help you develop a meal plan that will benefit you and your goals. Food is our energy source, and it is important to fuel your body in a way that promotes your health and wellness. Likewise, drinking lots of water is critical to maintaining vocal health, energy levels, and overall performance.

Stay Physically Active

We use our bodies in our craft, so it is important to prioritize physical health. This can look many different ways. Dance classes, yoga, a gym membership, running, and other fitness classes are all great ways to prioritize your physical health. Consistently working out has been linked to a healthier body and immune system time and time again. Make sure to add some sort of exercise to your routine to keep you performance-ready.

Listen to Your Body

Always do what is best for you and your body, and always consult professionals when necessary. Prioritizing your health as an actor can be difficult, but it is the only way to have any sort of longevity in this career. By prioritizing your health, you ensure that you are able to get on the stage and give the best possible performance.

Take care of yourself, stay healthy, and break a leg!
