Theatre Across The Pond
Theatre Across the Pond
By Rylee Vogel
Broadway is deeply connected to New York City. It is a central theater hub where musicals and plays come to life in large-scale productions. However, Broadway is not the only major theater location in the world. London houses one of the greatest theater hubs globally, known as the West End.
The West End is group of large theaters all located near the West End of London (hence the name). Much like Broadway, these theaters stage major musical productions and plays every year. They attract high levels of tourism, and the shows are considered some of the most prestigious in the world.
There are approximately 40 theaters located on the West End, strikingly similar to Broadway’s 41. Some of the world’s longest-running shows have played at West End theaters. Les Misérables has been running since 1985 and is currently the longest running musical in both Broadway and West End history.
Many Broadway shows originated on the West End and transferred across the pond with their success. Some examples include Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Mamma Mia!, Six, & Juliet, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Similarly, many Broadway shows transfer to London, allowing audiences across the world to enjoy the same productions and experience the magic of musical theater.
Contrasted with Broadway stages, many West End theaters have been around for hundreds of years, producing productions since the seventeenth century. The oldest still operating theater is the Theater Royal, Drury Lane. It was built in 1663. Currently running there is Much Ado About Nothing starring Tom Hiddleston and Hayley Atwell. Because these theaters were built at different times in history, their sizes vary greatly. The largest is the London Coliseum, which sits 2,359, while the smallest is the Arts Theater, seating 350.
The West End is an incredible center of art and culture. It is not so much Broadway’s rival but more its twin. Having multiple theater hubs across the world creates more opportunities for people to engage and fall in love with the art.
